Things to do in Duong Lam Ancient Village

Duong Lam is a cluster of traditional hamlets built almost entirely from laterite, the reddish-brown volcanic stone quarried locally, which darkens with age and gives the whole village its distinctive colour. This is a settlement of family houses, communal halls, wells and gates, not a pottery centre and not a temple complex, though small shrines sit within the village fabric.

Several houses are centuries old, still lived in by the families who built them, with courtyards, tiled roofs and timber frames largely unchanged. Spring brings a fine, persistent drizzle typical of northern Vietnam, while autumn, from around October, offers the clearest, driest light for the laterite walls and lanes.

Expect a still, rural pace rather than a curated museum circuit.
