Things to do in Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh, roughly two hours south of Hanoi by road, is a province of limestone karst rising out of rice fields and rivers, not a coastline.

It is often marketed as the "Ha Long Bay on land", a comparison that misleads more than it explains: there is no sea and no bay here, only narrow rivers threading between limestone towers, seen from a rowing boat at Trang An or Tam Coc.

The province groups several distinct sites rather than one attraction, among them the ancient capital of Hoa Lu, the viewpoint at Mua Cave and the large Bai Dinh Pagoda complex, with Cuc Phuong further west. Trang An was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2014, a mixed cultural and natural listing rare in the region.
