Things to do in Mu Cang Chai

Mu Cang Chai is a district in the far north-west, built on steep terraced rice fields that climb the hillsides above the road rather than a single flat valley floor.

The terraces are not green or golden all year: fields are flooded and bare for weeks before transplanting, then green through the growing months, and only turn gold for a limited harvest window that shifts from year to year with the weather and the timing of planting, sometimes concentrated around the La Pan Tan, Che Cu Nha and De Xu Phinh communes.

Outside that window the slopes can look patchy, part-cut or muddy rather than photogenic. Cloud and rain at this altitude can also hide the terraces entirely for days at a time.
